Quarryburn Quilting

Gammill dealer for New Zealand

Quarryburn Quilting provides sales, service and supplies to customers in New Zealand.

The realization of a long-held ambition, Lesley’s purchase of a fully computerized Statler by Gammill quilting machine in 2006 quickly tapped into a need, and business took off, resulting in the purchase of a second machine in 2008.

Quilting is a passion for Lesley, who has been sewing since she was a child.  “My mother and grandmothers taught me to sew and knit, and I made clothing for both myself and my four children, as well as dabbling in many needlework crafts over the years.”

Lesley taught herself to quilt by reading magazines and watching “simply quilts” with Alex Andersen, and because she knows just how much effort goes into producing a single quilt recognizes the privilege and responsibility of being trusted with such precious work.

Lesley is the winner of several blue ribbons for quilts completed in her spare time, taking Excellence in Machine Quilting at the New Zealand Quilt Symposium in 2011, and having two quilts accepted for the World Quilt Show in 2010.

The History of Green Hill Longarm Quilting

Statler & Jacob ReadingBy Jacob Reading

From a very early age I realised my Mum had a strange genetic trait, she was unable to walk past a fabric shop without going in! I soon started to understand that Mum enjoyed collecting fabrics and I thought she just looked at them like stamps.

I would often go to bed as a young boy and next morning I would have a new pair of shorts, shirt and my sisters would often have new dresses. They were not produced by the elves but by my Mum with the fabric she would get from all those visits to fabric shops.

My second eldest sister soon followed Mum and began collecting fabrics and making things with it. My sister then got a job as the Saturday girl in the local fabric shop. She dreamed of one day owning such a shop. She gained more retail experience and soon, my Mum joined her, becoming the Saturday girl.

One day the owner said she was going to close the shop and so my Sister decided to purchase the shop. She took over running it at the age of 20. Mum supported her making quilts and projects for the shop. Dad did a complete re-fit of the shop and did the accounts.

The Shop grew more and more successful; new customers came most days. Soon the shop was too small and exactly one year after my sister took over she moved the shop to a much bigger one on the high street, again after another complete re-fit from Dad and this time with my help.

My sister was so busy she asked me to help with putting out the stock. I soon became very interested in the fabrics, how they all blended together and made great patterns. I wanted to know more about quilting. I read loads of books and watched my sister and Mum at work. We became aware of a need in the area for a longarm quilting service. Mum along with her sister had researched longarms for years and without any doubt knew the best system was Gammill.

Now the perfect timing of life: I became very interested in longarm quilting. Dad made various contacts with people and found the Gammill with the Statler system was the best way to go. We found one for sale and I went to the training with my parents to learn more. A few months later at a European quilt retreat, I had the privilege of meeting Georgia and Ivan Stull, Statler by Gammill owners, from Harrisonville, Missouri. Georgia is also a Statler CreativeStudio Certified Trainer and a Gammill Sales Representative. I was convinced more than ever this was for me. After a basement conversion, the Gammill machine arrived. Within days the quilts came in from customers and I have never looked back. I have been supported by Georgia and Ivan whom I call my “Quilting Parents.”

I have been non-stop quilting for the past two and a half years. When the opportunity to join Gammill as a dealership arose, I was thrilled. To be able to share the world of Gammill and Statler with others is a very exciting time.

While my machine is running I plan and design quilts and in my free time, I make quilts to my designs, which are displayed in my sister’s shop. It works for both of us, people can see what longarm quilting can achieve and also see what a quilt looks like with the fabrics for sale in the shop.

I have always enjoyed working with computers so using them for quilting is a dream come true. My Dad is an engineer by trade so we will work together servicing machines and solving any issues that might arise.

As you have gathered we are a large close family. We were all home schooled and we all work very well together and enjoy working with each other. We were brought up to believe in ourselves and that if we work hard and put our minds to it, anything is possible.

Threads Run Thru It Quilt Shop

Gammill Dealer for North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey

Threads Run Thru It is owned and operated by Steve and  Lori Clayton.  The Claytons retired from the United States Navy in 1990, Lori as a Navy Nurse and Steve as a Chief Warrant Officer.  In 2003, they moved to their farm in Phenix, Va, and built a log home. Lori was looking for ways to keep busy.

In 2004 she purchased a commercial embroidery machine and started “Threads Run Thru It” from her home. Lori’s embroidery business was doing well, but she knew there was more she could be involved with to stay busy. In 2007, they purchased a Gammill Longarm Quilting machine. In 2008, they upgraded to the Statler Stitcher computerized version. By this time, her business had taken over their home, consuming nearly 1500 feet of the 3000-foot house. In March 2010, Steve said enough is enough and in April 2010, he started construction on their quilt shop. “She wanted her shop built so bad that she helped me pour footings,” Steve said.

Lori’s mother had taught her to sew early in life and through the years she made hundreds of items such as shirts, dresses, valances, table cloths and runners, curtains, costumes.  “You name it, I tried to sew it,” Lori shared.  In the mid 1980s, she learned to quilt.  In the back of her mind, she dreamed of owning her own quilt shop someday and now, her dream is reality. In 2010, they opened their quilt shop. In 2017, they moved the quilt shop to a new location in Rustburg, Virginia and converted the former shop into a longarm training center.

Lori shares, “The good Lord has blessed us more than one can imagine. Our health is good, we have great friends, we are members of Midway Baptist Church and have four wonderful children.  Jessica  graduated from nursing school in Lynchburg, VA. and now works in Richmond. Gus (married to Grace) is a sailor in the United States Coast Guard stationed in NJ.  Andrea (married to James) is a Nurse in Fredericksburg, VA. And Casey (married to Matt) is a teacher in Arizona.  We have four grandsons, Eli, Silas, Will, and Wes, and one granddaughter, Ella. What a treasure it is to have such beautiful grandchildren.”

A Touch of Thread Quilting Gallery

Gammill dealer for Ohio, lower Michigan, southern Indiana, western Pennsylvania, western West Virginia

A Touch of Thread was founded in 2003 by Martha Creasy, a fourth-generation quilter from Zanesville, Ohio. Her passion for quilting sparked when her mother opened a small quilt shop in the quaint village of Dresden, Ohio in 1991. In 1995, Martha purchased her first Gammill longarm quilting machine, and it was “love at first stitch.” Shortly, she began custom quilting for a handful of clients from her mother’s shop. This small group quickly blossomed into a large base of loyal clientele. Upon a visit to the Gammill headquarters in West Plains, Missouri nearly 10 years later, Martha was so impressed she decided to take her love of longarm quilting and open her own authorized Gammill and Statler dealership. Shortly after opening, her husband Doug made the business his full time career after 23 years in electric motor repair industry. Doug delivers and sets up our machines, as well as services them. Martha’s oldest son, Dustin manages the store. Adam, Martha’s other son also sets up and delivers machines. Dougie, their youngest son, helps in the quilting gallery as well.

Stitch-n-Frame

Gammill dealer for Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana,  Arkansas,

The Stitch-N-Frame Shop in Vicksburg, Mississippi has been in business since 1983. It is a full-line quilt shop with more than 9,000 bolts of fabric including more than 1000 batiks. The store started out with cross-stitch and knitting supplies and over the years those have been phased out and quilting has taken over. The owner Mary Kay Elliott inherited the shop from her mother and is carrying on the tradition of serving all of Mississippi and Louisiana, portions of southern Arkansas, western Tennessee and Alabama with the finest quality quilt fabrics, books, notions, classes, blocks of the month, kits and all the things quilters need. The store is located at Exit 11 off of I20, a major east-west highway stretching across the south. If you’re ever in the area please stop by and see them. Vicksburg has a rich history from the Civil War and there are battlefields you can tour, antebellum homes with cannon balls still embedded in the walls, a military park and Civil War museum, just to name a few of the attractions.
