Sherilyn Mortensen, Quilt Artist
Location: Cedaredge, Colorado
Website: Sew Kind of Wonderful
In 1998 Sherilyn made her first quilt. She really had no idea what she was doing but just knew she wanted a king size scrappy quilt for her bed. After gathering her own old clothes, she then gathered up her neighbors old clothes until she had enough for her quilt. She pieced it, hand quilted it, and used it until it wore out. She didn’t even care that her points didn’t match! That first quilt was the beginning of her passion for quilting. Over the years she has polished and fine tuned her quilting skills. Recently, she found a new passion within the quilting world, longarm quilting! A few years ago Sherilyn bought her first longarm, a Gammill classic. She took to longarm quilting very quickly and naturally. Her love, excitement and passion for quilting has multiplied since discovering the magical world of longarm quilting. She believes it is definitely the icing on the cake when it comes to creating a quilted work of art. Since discovering her new found passion of longarm quilting, she’s often heard saying “I’ll piece anything just so I can quilt it!”
Sherilyn is married to Mark and has two sons and one daughter. Within the last couple of years, they’ve added a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law and an adorable baby granddaughter to their family! She keeps everyone warm and comfy with plenty of quilts. The Mortensens raised their children in Central Florida and currently resides in beautiful Cedaredge, Colorado.
Sherilyn’s Quilting Tip: “Relax and breath! This helps you get in a ‘quilting groove.’ If I can relax enough quilting is almost as peaceful as meditating.”
